Inspiration

Kids today are surrounded by screens, dopamine, and distractions. A few of my new parent friends were feeling overwhelmed trying to teach their little ones about keeping up with chores, homework & extracurriculars, and calling loved ones. So I thought: what happens if we could make Notes/ToDoist for kids? Enter Watermelon Quest—a fun, kid-friendly ToDoist app that frames everything into Quests.

What it does

A little productivity game… with watermelon. Kids can input their Quests and prioritize up to three Quests every day. They can set Goals and associated Quests. very quest they complete will be noted in the "History" tab (great for convincing parents for allowance or a visual indicator of "doing good").

As their main Quests get completed, a watermelon visually gets eaten. Hopefully super fun and delightful for them!

How we built it

All Bolt prompts except for the watermelon images! Started with the Quest tab, asking Bolt for a simple task manager app. It took a while to get the state-management with the corresponding watermelon images correct. Since a day can have 1, 2, or 3 main Quests to complete the watermelon, figuring out the edge cases became a little tricky. Bolt + Claude was able to easily complete the rest of the app (Goals and History tab).

Challenges we ran into

Asked Bolt to generate the whole, partial, and fully-eaten watermelon images as SVGs. This proved to be tricky and non-doable. Ended up importing images which solved all the issues.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Just that it works!!! And coding & debugging the tricky watermelon state management all worked through prompts.

Also that this was a simple idea that successfully came to fruition! Unlocks so many ideas for custom apps for families or even small teams.

What we learned

  1. Start simple and build complexity bit by bit after!
  2. Ask Bolt if there are other ways to approach a problem (e.g. I asked if importing images would be more helpful)
  3. Ask to debug and closely analyze bugs and "do not write any code" seemed to help create plans of execution
  4. Console! I kept looking for a Console tab near Bolt's Terminal window, so I wish in Bolt's responses it would give some instructions (Inspect > Console).

What's next for Watermelon Quest

  • Adding allowance features tied to Quest completion
  • Recurring Quests
  • A “Share” function for playful sibling rivalry or classroom use
  • Groups and Leader boards
  • Supabase & Acct management. Wasn't planned for V1, as the target demographic might be still too young to have email addresses :)
