Inspiration
Our inspiration is the current eThekwini water crisis. In Durban we have experience several floods, and water outages. It has affected our daily lives. There are some areas in the city that still don't have access to water.
What it does
WaterHub informs users of ongoing or current situations in regards to reservoirs and water pipes and where water outages may occur.
How we built it
We plan on building an app using .NET MAUI on Visual Studio. This app informs users of water cuts, burst pipes and flooding that occur within the eThekwini Municipality area.
Challenges we ran into
We at first struggled on which sustainable development goal to work with. The members in the group come from different backgrounds and have experienced issues that the other couldn't relate to. Once we settled on an aim, the solution to our problem came in easy but the implementation became a struggle all throughout our project. Collecting data and displaying it has proven to be harder than it seems.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
With the three of us having such busy schedules, we managed to come together to work on this very important project. Each member of the group had their own expertise in their skill which we were able to put together. We were all equally knowledgeable with the topic at hand. We displayed amazing teamwork with this project and developed a good friendship.
What we learned
We learnt about the challenges that come with water outages as it disrupts our daily lives and how bad the water scarcity really is in South Africa. With intensive research we learnt how not only are we affected but how the underprivileged have it worse. Not only do they not have access to water, the little access to water they have is unclean.
What's next for WaterHub
Upgrading and researching more ways to improve water purification in the water hubs for a long lasting storage. WaterHub could collaborate with the municipality to reach areas that have no water and provide them with water truck or a Jojo tank to store water in case of an outage.
