Inspiration
We realized that a water bot for discord does not exist, so we could use this opportunity to bestow knowledge upon discord users. Since discord is a popular method of communication, this bot would be able to inform people about this substance that they encounter in their everyday lives in a meaningful way.
What it does
- Gives general facts about water, as well as related facts about biology, chemistry, and pollution
- Gives the best selling water bottles on Amazon
- Gives pictures of water
- Reminds you to stay hydrated anytime the word "thirst" or "dehydrate" is mentioned
- Reacts to Discord messages with a water droplet emoji anytime "water" or "H2O" is mentioned
- Gives search results about water conservation
How we built it
We used python to create a discord bot, as well as the hosting service UptimeRobot to make it active 24/7.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into a multitude of challenges, including various bugs and errors in the code. In addition, we had trouble with some other aspects of our bot that we did not know how to implement, particularly the search feature. However, through much work and perseverance, we overcame these obstacles.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Despite our numerous setbacks, we managed to create a bot we are proud of. This was our first time coding a discord bot, but we all are satisfied with the results. Even when we wanted to give up or scrap the idea entirely, we decided to forge onward with WaterBot.
What we learned
We learned how useful discord bots can be, as well as how to create them. We originally thought a discord bot would be much more complicated, but it was fun! We also learned how to work on software in a group effectively to make the most of our time.
What's next for WaterBot
Possibly expanding the search feature so that it can get facts from various websites to display, essentially upgrading most of the bot's functionality.
