Water Watch Inspiration In 2022, three weeks into the school year, the College of Charleston was flooded, canceling school for 2 days; a year later, Charleston experienced its sixth-highest tide in history. We were inspired to create an app to inform the greater public concerning necessary flood safety information.
What it does Water Watch provides simultaneous updates on floods, tides, precipitation, humidity, traffic patterns, and wind. Using public data sourced from the NOAA and privately collected data for the Charleston Peninsula, our goal is to alert the citizens of Charleston about flood levels, give them safer and more accurate evacuation routes, and assist emergency services in dealing with flooding.
How we built it ArcGIS Experience Builder is a software created by ArcGIS, a geospatial company. It auto-generates the HTML, CSS, and Javascript, allowing users to create a web app with low to no code. It has access to thousands of public databases and presets and at the same time, gives users the ability to implement their features, data, etc.
Challenges we ran into Due to the nature of ArcGIS, certain features proved hard to implement. In addition, we were unable to add certain frontend elements. Lastly, the allotted time proved hard to work around; we were forced to choose which parts to prioritize.
Accomplishments that we’re proud of We are extremely proud of the amount of work we were able to cram within these 72 hours: Creating the App The Synopsis Trailer Video PowerPoint Presentation
What’s next for Water Watch We plan on migrating our app to both the App Store and play store, developing it from the ground up. Furthermore, we plan to expand our market reach to other flood susceptible areas within the United States such as New York City.
