Inspiration

Looking at the pollution that is caused by the fast fashion makes us wonder maybe there is something wrong with our lifestyle.

What it does

We create an app that the user can log their water usage and their daily purchases. We then translate the hidden cost or reflect their daily water usage to them.

How we built it

The app is supposedly a mobile app but since we are not sufficient at making mobile app we decided to use proto.io and c++ to help create a prototype to help demonstrate what we want to achieve.

Challenges we ran into

Time management and Team cooperation are the two biggest problems. I originally planned on using pyqt5 to create a prototype but throughout the coding session, there some dead ends that I was not able to solve. In result of that, I was not able to create a functional prototype for this project.

Apart from that, we also were having a hard time deciding how we collect our user's input. We could show them clickable options or we could have them manually enter the information. The problem with the first option is that it is harder for it to grow and improve as we the developers won't be able to find out what the user want but are not there. The problem with the second approach is keyword matching and how we deal with variation of input.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I think the best thing is the idea. Though the implementation was not successful, we believe with more time and a little bit more experience, this could be a very applicable app.

What we learned

When it comes to irresponsible production and water pollution, there isn't much that our daily folks can do. It is very supply side bounded.

What's next for Water Usage Tracking App

As of right now, the water usage tracking app is mainly focusing on the two aforementioned aspects. However, I believe it could achieve much more than that. It could develop to be an environmental awareness app that also includes information like nearby volunteering works, such as picking up trashes from the beach.

Since one of the inspiration is fast fashion, we also believe we could partner up with other merchants or even create our own platform for reselling clothes. That would be very important since 90 percent of the donation clothing are being dumped back to third world countries and create more pollution.
