Inspiration

The average American spends 80-100 gallons of water a day. A lot of what we do involves using water. We take it for granted so much, that we forget that is an important resource that must be taken care of and used wisely. A water usage calculator is very useful to save water and money.

Rationale:

  • Raising Awareness on Water Consumption: Calculator can help people understand how much water they use on a daily basis, which is important for promoting water conservation.
  • Promoting Water Efficiency: Calculator can suggest alternatives to reduce water usage.
  • Sustainable Water Usage: Help track water usage.

What it does

With the water usage calculator, you can log in multiple showers, baths, toilet flushes, dishwashing sessions (including hand-washed and machine-washed), toilet flushes, washing machine sessions, and log in minutes of garden watering. You can also view advice to reduce water usage for each particular activity. You can view a daily log on the terminal and on a graph which shows day by day water usage and cost.

How we built it

We researched sources such as US EPA to find water usage for different activities and ways to reduce water usage. We figured out average amounts of water used for each activity.

Challenges we ran into

Figuring out how to set up collaboration was difficult, and we had issues with Google Collab. We used Replit in the end. It was hard trying to figure out how to store and use data in a TXT file and how to graph. We tried turning it into a website but failed.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were able to complete it in time and we learned about coding with collaboration. I, Amit Mehta, am thankful that this hackathon went well as it is my first hackathon.

What we learned

We learned about Datetime, NumPy, Matplotlib, and a little bit of Django.

What's next for Water Usage Calculator

We could add region specific costs, more activities, custom profile activities, and a graphical user interface.
