Water scarcity is a current and globally escalating issue which has many underlying contributing factors such as a lack of visibility of consumption and uncertainty regarding water supply leading to under-valuing water as a resource. We were motivated to address these contributors to tackle the problem on a deeper level and prevent the risk of future water conflicts given the increasing climate pressures. We focus on empowering individuals with more accurate information and control over their water usage.
Database: We will have data collected from a variety of (should be reliable) sources, such as:
- Local NGOs data
- Weather forecast (rainfall patterns)
- Water-access conditions
Target Users will be: Upper-Middle Class users in Cape Town area in South Africa, this is to test for feasibility of the app, and for later to launch in wider areas.
The Cape Town households matches the following criteria:
- Communities in water‑stressed countries (List of Water-Stressed Countries)
- Farmers managing seasonal water availability
- Households needing reliable access to clean, sanitary water (Even developed places in India, then it will be really helpful because technology is available)
- Areas with limited infrastructure but widespread mobile access
Water Supply Tracker The user will log their data such as:
- Volume of water left in Water Tank (or connect water tank to app)
- Link the taps in the household with IoT sensors to keep track of real-time water flow AI model provides:
- Predictions on how long the user’s current supply will last (e.g., “estimated 2.3 weeks remaining”)
- Alerts for when water scarcity is likely
- Actionable advice (e.g., conservation tips, when to collect water, when and where to seek alternative sources)
One of the main challenges we came across in this project was balancing feasibility and ambition. Our motivation surrounded being able to target the issue of water scarcity globally and entirely. We had to consider solutions that can be implemented effectively in a short time frame and actually produce the intended impacts and results meaning we had to focus on specific contexts such as that of South Africa. Within this region we had to further ground our ideas and evaluate the most effective target audience and tailoring our solution to them to ensure a more successful project.
We are therefore proud that we have been able to develop a real world solution aligned with constraints as opposed to a solely theoretical solution. We have considered technical elements alongside our business model to produce a well rounded idea. In this process, we have learnt the importance of research and analysis in addressing a multi faceted issue.
AmanziTracker is scalable and we aim to refine the app with updates looking at another component of water scarcity. We hope to solve the reliability of supply through quality assurance measures as well via a smart UV water sanitation system that automatically adjusts its light intensity based on real-time water flow rate, turbidity, and contamination levels, ensuring consistent disinfection without wasting energy or under-treating during demand spikes. The app would display the analytics regarding the sanitation levels, further equipping individuals with important knowledge to help make efficient consumption decisions while remaining healthy.
