This project was inspired by the water scarcity issues, particularly in parts of Africa and Latin America. To support them, we decided to build a game to raise awareness about this issue. Although not included in this prototype, there would be a PSA at the end of each level asking players to consider supporting an organization such as Charity:Water to help these people.
The game is an 8bit maze designed in JavaScript, HTML and CSS, where the player plays as an Ethiopian parent going to collect one of the last portions of water available for the day. Features to be added to a complete version of this game would be a timer, NPCs with dialogue and culture facts, and also a water supply, which acts as a stamina bar that the player must keep above 0 by stopping at mini water sources until they find the supply.
All components of the game except for the background of image were built from the ground up by our team members. As only one of us had coded in JavaScript before and only one of us had used GitHub - which we used for collaborating - this project was very much a learning process for us as we figured things out on the run. Another challenge we faced was the time difference, as one of our members lives in an opposite timezone and slept sporadically to be able to coordinate coding.
This hackathons was a joy to be able to attend, providing us with the opportunity to meet each other and participate in fun events. Overall, we are very happy with how far we were able to come in a limited time span and how much we could learn. Thank you for providing us with that.
