Demonstration & Breakdown of our Project

Who Are We?

We are a group of 5 UCSD students with majors including Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Computer Science.

Inspiration

Our team was tasked with the theme of "The Outdoors", for us we wanted to build something regarding nature, where we settled with the idea of a water purity tester. We also wanted to create a portion of it where you can log and monitor where you test your water. Essentially say you are on a hike and pass a body of water, with this project, you are able to not only log the purity of the water, but also save the location that you can refer back to later.

Water Purity Tester

Our project functions as a water purity tester that tests specifically the Turbidity (cloudiness) and TDS (contents) of the water. Additionally, the location, time, and values of the water are stored and displayed on a map the user can refer back to that displays all of this information.

Important information

The purity of the water that we test refers to the Turbidity and TDS of our project. Turbidity refers to the cloudiness of water which utilized 2 ports of a diode and a light receiving port. The light receiving port reads how much light is passed through what is between it, thus giving us our Turbidity value. A high turbidity means clearer water, lower turbidity means cloudier/dirtier water. It does NOT measure the contents, just the visual of the water. The TDS values refer to "Total Dissolved Solids" that measures the amount of substances present in the liquid that we are testing. This is achieved by the sensor measuring the conductivity of the water, so the more substances in the water, the more conductive it is, and thus our TDS value will increase. A higher TDS means more substances in the water, a lower value means less substances present.

The Process

Linked on this document are logs of the past month and a half of working on this project. Illustrated in this document are everything from the challenges that we faced, to the different things that we had talked about working on this project. This includes all of the challenges we had faced on this project, to the troubleshooting methods and solutions to the problems we had putting together everything. There was a lot to streamline to having this document here lists everything that we had done for this project. (bottom of the document is where the logs begin)

What's next for Water Purity Tester

Main goal would be to make this project portable and battery powered, which should be simple enough. Next would be to figure out a way to log the values of TDS/Turbidity, location, and date/time without the use of a hotspot/wifi. I think this could be achieved using some sort of storage, that will then be able to be retrieved and used once you are able to use internet/wifi.
