Inspiration## Inspiration
In our local village, water supply billing and record-keeping were entirely manual, managed on paper registers. This often led to human errors, lost data, and difficulties in tracking outstanding payments. I wanted to use my computer science background to solve a real-world problem in my community. That inspired me to build this digital utility billing software to automate calculations and bring transparency to our local water management.
What it does
It is a custom digital water supply billing and collection software designed specifically for rural communities. It automates financial calculations, replaces manual paper-based ledger books, and allows administrators to easily track water usage, generate monthly bills, and manage payment collections smoothly.
How we built it
I developed this standalone tool using custom web technologies:
- Frontend: Built with HTML, CSS, and interactive JavaScript to create a clean, user-friendly dashboard.
- Logic: Implemented custom JavaScript functions to handle complex billing calculations and data management on the fly.
- Layout: Designed specifically to be scannable and easy to use for people who are transitioning from paper registers to digital systems.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges was keeping the software lightweight yet reliable enough to replace physical books without any data loss. Designing a simplified user interface that non-technical village administrators could easily understand and use was also a challenge, but through continuous testing and refinement, I made it highly intuitive.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am extremely proud that this software is not just a theoretical project, but a functional utility designed for my local area. Successfully replacing manual paper ledgers with a digital, error-free automated system that helps my community is the greatest achievement of this project.
What we learned
I learned how to bridge the gap between academic computer science concepts and practical real-world applications. This project significantly enhanced my skills in software logic, JavaScript data handling, and user interface design tailored for specific community needs.
