Mumbaikars have faced water logging issues for a long time now. Due to the geographical characteristics the water has nowhere to go when it rains heavily along with a high tide. Due to this a lot of water gets accumulated in the city and there is a lot of water logging. Now this water logging is usually temporary. So, we need some way for the people in Mumbai to know how to travel in these conditions. For this exact reason I have proposed 2 ideas how we can get around this issue. This project would help the people of all cities like Mumbai that are located near a water body.

What it does

There are two modes in the app. One mode is to navigate from point A to point B just like google maps but better. It will show you how much water has been logged in the route you are planning to take, or you can choose from the routes the app suggests. It will also show you what mode of transport is safe for travelling. Other mode is to report a water logging situation in the user's area.

How does it work

Let's start with Reporting. So, user can look out of the window and on their street. Then go on the app, click on 'Report Water logging' button. They are greeted with 'What3Words' API and will ask them to select their location on the app. This will help us to pinpoint user's location to better adjust the surrounding area. The app will then ask a question that "How much water do you think has logged on your street?". Assuming the user answers it correctly, the user has 6 options to choose from to report water logging. Options are like negligible(<5mm) to flood(>300mm). Then the user clicks on submit. The data will then be stored in database. The surroundings of the users are adjusted as they might probably be having the same inclination and water logging level. Surrounding areas with lower inclination levels are also adjusted as they might have an even worse water logging level. The routes for the other users are adjusted as well so they can avoid such areas where water logging is just too much. 24 hrs. later the data is refreshed. Let's take a look at Directions. This will be similar to google maps navigation. A person has to input Start point and destination along with mode of transport. Once the user presses the 'Go!' button, the app will give user a best possible route to avoid waterlogged areas. It will also tell the user what mode of transport an ideal choice in that condition could be. Along will all that the app will also prompt the average water logging on the route and what mode of transport will be ideal. Then the user can start travelling.

What we learned

I Learned what Figma can be used for. Learned what prototype and prototyping is. How to do it and what option do we have while doing so. other thing I have learned during this project is that one person cannot and should not do all the heavy lifting. Team and teamwork are absolutely important.

What's next for Water Logging Reporter and Navigator

There are a lot of things that can be integrated in this app. Weather Api can also be integrated so that it can become a one stop solution for a user. We can use A.I. to eliminate all the wrong user inputs that might come for the water logging level and also eliminate the outliers. A.I. can also help us to suggest better routes taking multiple factors into consideration and not just water logging levels. We can also prepare a prediction model for water logging after we have enough data over the years. Apart from that we can collaborate with the government. Every streetlight can be installed with a sonar water level sensor. It can help us detect the depth of the water at that particular point. This will help us to create a water logging level map for the entire city in real time as streetlights are widespread all over the city.
