Inspiration

We were inspired to create a device and app to reach the 90% diversion goal for 2035.

What it does

This technology uses an app which scans the recycling icon on the waste product and guides the Waterloo community to recycle correctly with incentives. This then leads to a modified recycling bin that tracks how many items are recycled in order to build a competition surrounding recycling on campus.

How we built it

We used FlutterFlow to build the mobile app interface which scans the items. We used an Arduino Uno wired to a PIR sensor to detect items in front of the recycling bin and then a force sensor to validify that an item was placed in the waste bin.

Challenges we ran into

We struggled to work with ML processes and integrate it into an application as well as connecting with motors to develop an open and closed chute system.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of making simulations of our circuits and an interface for the WATCycle app.

What we learned

We learned how to navigate feeding pictures into learning models to recognize different recycling icons. We learned how to use FlutterFlow and create simulations in TinkerCAD.

What's next for WATCycle

WATCycle has created a skeleton of a final product to follow in an effective and small footprint manner.
