π‘ Inspiration
Movie nights are supposed to be fun, but choosing what to watch often turns into endless scrolling and debates. This inspired us to build WatchWise AI, a Fire TV application that makes movie selection quicker and easier for individuals and groups.
π¬ What It Does
WatchWise AI recommends movies based on the user's mood, preferred vibe, and available watching time. Its Group Blend feature helps people with different preferences find a shared movie suggestion.
Users can explore recommendations, view match scores, and understand why a movie was suggestedβall through a TV-friendly interface.
π οΈ How We Built It
We built the frontend using React Native and TypeScript with Amazon's Vega development environment. The backend uses Java and Spring Boot, providing REST API endpoints for recommendation requests.
The application sends user preferences to the backend, where rule-based logic processes the request and returns recommendation data. The frontend then displays the result to the user.
π§ Challenges We Faced
One of our main challenges was connecting the Fire TV application to the Spring Boot backend and ensuring that the recommendations displayed in the interface reflected the API response. We also worked on making the app's navigation and Group Blend experience suitable for a TV environment.
Testing the integration helped us identify and fix issues between the frontend and backend.
π What We Learned
Building WatchWise AI helped us gain practical experience with cross-platform app development, REST API integration, backend communication, and testing in a simulator. It also taught us the importance of connecting every part of an application into one working experience.
π What's Next
Future improvements could include smarter AI/ML-based recommendations, integration with movie databases, more advanced group preference matching, and links to supported streaming platforms.
