Watchr is the web-app I have created today. This app is for everyone as struggle and danger are not subjective to certain aspects of a person, and especially now during COVID, crime rates are thriving. Through Watchr, I hope to save many lives, since crime and prejudice are unfortunately thriving in society around the world at this current time, and for that reason, Watchr is a discrete yet highly effective app that I hope to develop further. The goal is an app that detects the number of fingers you have up on your hand and from that, do a certain action. 1 is to send the user’s location to close contacts, 2 is to message and call emergency contacts, 3 is for calling the police, 4 is to sound off an alarm for those around to hear and 5 is for all of the above. Ideally, this app is placed inside a car, under a car seat that is lit up, so the criminal cannot see what is happening but it can also be placed anywhere around the house. As of now, I have developed code to detect the number of finger’s on the user’s hand, and assign the specific action to it, as shown on the screen. As well as that, I have carried out the action for number 3, but the other actions are still in progress. For Watchr, I used python and OpenCV, especially for the detection of the hands, which I chose to use since it is not expensive to have and many people already have it, although not all. A big challenge was getting the alarm to sound off, although that was fixed after lots of research. As well as that, Open CV was extremely interesting to further develop my knowledge on, and I hope to use it more often for future projects. For this reason, for those users, I hope for them to have buttons to press instead, and although it won’t be as efficient or discrete, perhaps it can help many. Around the world, everyone is targeted, whether it be racially motivated, domestic abuse or theft and robbery. Crime and danger do not take into account wealth or skin colour, so through this app “Watchr”, I hope to save several lives, or at least give people the reassurance that there is someone there to help them.
