Inspiration

While I was worried about myself and my family health, I could only see the numbers rising country-wise of city-wise but not at a very hyperlocal so that to be more aware myself or to make people more aware in my vicinity.

What it does

If plots a heatmap based on your current location and shows whether you're in redzone of people put in quarantine or people infected.

How I built it

We built it like in a day, used the data shared publicly by the government and reverse geocoded their locality(with an accuracy of 100-150 meters) and built a webapp to show how vulnerable they are to coronavirus in their locality.

Challenges I ran into

  1. Had to deal with lots of bad address data which we could fetch using the Google Maps API so had to work on them manually so that people who use this are benefited by being more aware or stay safe with no tension or depression or panic.
  2. New data update - Currently we have to do it manually but when a consistent source is available we can totally automate this.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

We were able to complete it and share with our friends and family to see how safe they are or to keep a watch in their neighborhood for people who are quarantined.

What I learned

I learnt about Google Maps API and how it's easy to use and can drastically affect the things we build for society. I learnt about the importance of motivation, we never felt tired and always knew that we have to do this to do our part for the social good.

What's next for WatchCovidly

Next is to ingest more public data by government or tie-up directly with the government and keep the data source upto date or better visualization. Currently it's done for Bangalore, India but if the data is shared the same system can be used by anyone in the world.
