Inspiration

The inspiration behind creating a solution for people with loss of smell using technology like Metaverse and Generative AI through Dall-E API, to create a multisensory experience, comes from the understanding of the impact that the loss of smell can have on a person's life. People with anosmia often struggle to enjoy the smells of food, appreciate the aroma of flowers, or even detect the odor of gas leaks. As smell is closely tied to our emotional and psychological well-being, losing the ability to smell can cause significant distress and impact a person's quality of life. After covid it has significantly increased and its impact is huge.

What it does

We want a perfume to be a close representation of our personality. Hence it is very important for us to be able to understand a perfume beyond smell. The originator of a perfume is able to represent a perfume in its truest sense. However, we are sometime unable to understand a perfume from its description, maybe because we have not experienced those earlier in our daily life. Hence, we propose a Metaverse enabled experience center at Estee Lauder outlets that leads consumers to a soulful aromatic journey. By incorporating visual and tactile elements into the fragrance identification process, such as virtual reality or augmented reality, users can experience a multi-sensory simulation of what it would be like to smell different fragrances.

This can enhance the overall customer experience by providing a unique and immersive environment that encourages exploration and discovery. The solution will also ensure that demographic considerations are done to personalize the experience as per geography. This can lead to increased engagement and interest in fragrance products, as well as greater customer satisfaction and loyalty.

By combining technology with fragrance identification, the value proposition is not only to assist those with loss of smell in choosing fragrances, but also to create a more enjoyable and memorable experience for all customers. Ultimately, this can lead to increased sales and customer loyalty for fragrance brands that offer this innovative solution.

How we built it

To build the solution for people with loss of smell using technology we did

Research: We conducted an initial assessment of prior research done in this space to understand if vision can replicate the sense of smell. We concluded that sufficient research has been done to conclude that vision can help elevate the understanding of smell. We have also researched on the impact and found that a lot of people are impacted by partial or full loss of smell. The loss of smell is more acute in people over 40. After Covid the problem has intensified further.

Develop a virtual environment: We created a module to identify the top attributes people can relate to in images used to describe a fragrance. We then generated images through Dall-E to revalidate the impact with artificial set of images as a metaverse experience can be different from a real-world experience. Statistical analysis of top elements which helped relate with the fragrance. This helped us to identify how and what elements will help us to simulate the Metaverse experience. We have been able to create the modules which will help us identify the key elements from real and artificially generated images. These elements need to be used in creating the Metaverse experience.

Challenges we ran into

Lack of resources - The survey results are not available, so we simulated with self-generated datasets. In a production environment we will be able to capture results from surveys.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Everyone came together with their ideas and has put their heart and soul with their hard work.

What we learned

To collaborate and how to embrace each other's strengths when resources are scarce.

What's next for Watch your Fragrance

The next steps can include: Further development and testing: The team may continue to refine and improve the technology, conduct more extensive testing with people with anosmia, and collect feedback to identify areas for improvement.

Expand the range of scents: The multisensory experience could be expanded to include a wider range of scents, including those that are difficult to find in real life or those that are associated with specific environments or experiences.

Integration with other technologies: The solution could be integrated with other technologies, such as wearable devices or apps, to provide a more comprehensive and personalized experience for users.

Commercialization: If the solution is successful and has demonstrated value, the team could explore options for commercialization, such as licensing the technology to bring the product to market. The solution is applicable not only to people with loss of smell but to all to elevate the experience of a perfume.

Education and awareness: The team may also focus on educating people about anosmia and how the multisensory experience can help people with this condition better understand and appreciate different scents.
