Inspiration
- Frontline Workers - The front-line workers have inspired us greatly with their sacrifice and heroic nature.
- The COVID-19 Response - The COVID-19 response managed to decrease the spread of the virus, but due to the recent lockdown lift the spread has increased
I want to spread awareness to change that!
What it does
Watch Together is an API based Covid tracker tool that allows users to virtually travel the globe and get live updates on the Covid Situation around the world. This means they don't have to visit news outlets or read articles to get educated on the Covid situation around them and relatives from other nations/countries. This Responsive Site asks for user input on which country they would like to select and navigate to; therefore, with my responsive map, one-click prompts up a pop up that educates the user on the Number of Cases, Number of Recoveries and Deaths.
Luckily, the doctors and frontline workers have gotten some control over the virus and the drop in cases is transpiring.
How I built it
To construct Watch Together, I used 3 different tools:
- Firebase: I used the firebase hosting feature to host my web app live for everyone and anyone to see.
- Leaflet API: I used the Leaflet API for the responsive map and the pop-up feature once the user presses a country.
- Disease.ch Doc: This tool was used to gather the correct information and apply it to the data such as the increase or decrease in the number of cases, recovered and deaths.
Challenges I ran into
The only challenge I faced was incorporating the Leaflet API because their documentation doesn't show how to import the specific files, I had to try to scavenge the hidden/missing information to complete this project. The missing information held me back me around 1 hour. Another problem that I ran into was the graphs, incorporating the Disease.sh Doc's info into graphs was a first for me and after watching a couple of videos I overcame this issue and prevailed.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am proud of the fact that I was able to finish the project within the restricted time period. The project seemed daunting at first, but as I got more involved, I started to enjoy every second of the progress. I was able to strengthen my individual coding knowledge, and without relying on others I was able to execute this under my own judgement.
What I learned
- How to use Leaflet API
- API integration
- How to create graphs from given information
- How to scrape data
What's next for Watch Together
- Expand Watch Together to incorporate the COVID-19 positive or negative form.
- Integrating a helpline with a chatting system to aid individuals to get through this pandemic together.
