Inspiration Every year, billions of tonnes of food, plastic, and energy are wasted — often without people even realising it. We wanted to build something that bridges the gap between good intentions and real action. WasteWise was born from a simple question: what if technology could make waste visible, understandable, and fixable for ordinary people? The ORIGIN hackathon's theme of responsibility and legacy pushed us to think beyond features. We asked ourselves: what kind of digital footprint do we want to leave behind? WasteWise is our answer — a tool that helps people shrink their environmental footprint by making waste personal, trackable, and solvable. What We Built WasteWise is a web application built with Python and Flask that helps users track and reduce three core types of waste: food, plastic, and energy. The app is designed for both individuals and small businesses. Core features include: •AI-powered personalised suggestions — based on your logged waste patterns, the app recommends specific, actionable steps to reduce waste in your daily or business routine. •User dashboard and tracking — a clean visual dashboard lets users log waste entries by category, view trends over time, and monitor their progress toward self-set reduction goals. •Interactive map and data visualisation — users can explore anonymised, aggregated waste data on an interactive map, seeing how their local area or region compares to national averages and benchmarks. How We Built It WasteWise was built using Python with Flask as the backend framework, powering the API endpoints, AI suggestion engine, and data processing logic. The frontend is rendered using Jinja2 templates with a lightweight CSS framework for the dashboard and map views. We integrated Leaflet.js for the interactive map visualisation and Chart.js for trend graphs on the user dashboard. The AI suggestion layer uses a rule-based model trained on waste reduction best practices, enhanced with pattern matching on user history to deliver contextually relevant tips.
🌍 Impact & Vision Who Is It For? WasteWise is designed for environmentally conscious individuals who want to take concrete action, as well as small businesses and restaurants looking to reduce operational waste and costs. It is equally accessible to people who are new to sustainability and those already committed to reducing their footprint. Why It Matters Waste is one of the most tangible and solvable environmental problems. Unlike carbon emissions, which feel abstract and distant, the food you throw away, the plastic you use, and the energy you waste are immediate and personal. WasteWise makes the invisible visible — giving people the data and intelligence to act. Even small reductions at the household level, multiplied across millions of users, can have a measurable impact on landfill volumes, greenhouse gas emissions from food decomposition, and resource consumption. WasteWise demonstrates that meaningful environmental responsibility does not require sacrifice — it requires awareness. Future Vision In the future, WasteWise could integrate with smart home devices, supermarket loyalty cards, and municipal recycling programmes to provide even richer, real-time data. We envision a version that connects communities — letting neighbourhoods compete, collaborate, and celebrate collective progress. Ultimately, we want WasteWise to become a platform that governments, schools, and businesses can adopt to build a culture of conscious consumption.
