About the Project: Wasteless
This project was created to address global water usage issues. Through a fun Job Simulator esk experience, you learn the weight of your water choices and helps you learn ways to help make more informed individual choices and to take legislative action!
Inspiration
The inspiration for Wasteless came from the growing concern about global water scarcity and food waste. Every year, the United States alone makes enough food waste to feed the entire global poor. We were driven by the need to educate people on how the management of water resources is crucial to maintaining sustainability in a rapidly changing world. We wanted to create an immersive experience that would raise awareness about these critical issues in an engaging and impactful way.
What It Does
Wasteless allows users to explore various global water systems and policies through an immersive VR experience. It provides users with interactive scenarios where they can see firsthand how water resources are managed in different regions and how local policies affect global sustainability, by playing a fun Job Simulator esk game!!
How We Built It
We built Wasteless using Unity and the Meta Quest SDK for immersive VR. Sound was done in FL studio and Audacity. 3D texturing and work was done in Blender and Substance Painter.
Challenges We Ran Into
One of the main challenges was ensuring that the project ran efficiently on the Meta Quest platform. Optimization for performance while maintaining a high level of detail was crucial. Another challenge was gathering accurate and up-to-date information about global water policies and systems, as data availability was often fragmented and not always up-to-date. We also had to carefully balance educational content with an engaging user experience to ensure the message was clear without overwhelming the user.
Accomplishments That We're Proud Of
We are proud of creating an interactive and educational VR experience that educates users on an important issue like water conservation. The integration of real-time data, and the ability for users to make decisions that impact the outcome, has made Wasteless a unique and immersive learning tool. We are also proud of the project's scalability, which can be adapted to include new data and regions as the world continues to evolve in terms of water management.
What We Learned
We learned the importance of balancing technical optimization with educational content in VR. We discovered the challenges of working with large amounts of data and how crucial it is to make that data accessible and engaging for users. Moreover, we gained a deeper understanding of the global water crisis and the diverse approaches to managing water resources worldwide.
What's Next for Wasteless
The next steps for Wasteless include expanding the project to cover more regions and water systems, incorporating real-time data streams to make the experience even more dynamic, and optimizing the platform further for other VR devices. We also plan to collaborate with environmental organizations to ensure that the project is as impactful as possible in spreading awareness about the importance of sustainable water use.
