Inspiration
Greenify-254 is inspired by a deep concern for the environmental crisis caused by improper waste management in Kenya. This includes organic waste, glass, plastic, metal, E-waste and paper.
Example:
According to National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA), only 8% of all the produced plastic waste is recycled. 19% is collected but not recycled and 73% ends up in landfills, and the overflowing landfills paint a grim picture. This plastic ends up in our oceans, harming marine life and entering the food chain, posing a significant threat to human health and ecological well-being.
The recently enacted Sustainable Waste Management Act of 2022 (NEMA Act) is a beacon of hope, outlining a comprehensive framework for responsible waste management in Kenya. The Act emphasizes key principles that resonate with our project's goals:
Shifting from Linear Disposal to a Circular Economy: The Act moves away from the outdated "throw-away" model and promotes a circular economy where waste becomes a valuable resource. WasteLess aligns with this vision by facilitating the recycling of various materials like paper, plastic, glass, scrap metal, and organic waste, giving them a second life and reducing the reliance on virgin resources.
Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR): The EPR principle holds producers responsible for the end-of-life management of their products. WasteLess directly addresses this by establishing a platform that connects waste generators with relevant recycling companies. This empowers producers to fulfil their EPR obligations and ensures proper waste management for the products they create.
Public Awareness and Education: The Act recognizes the importance of public education in promoting responsible waste management practices. Greenify-254 fulfills this objective by providing users with comprehensive educational resources on waste segregation, recycling methods, and the environmental benefits of responsible waste disposal.
What it does
Our project goal is to bridge the gap between waste generation and responsible recycling in Kenya, aligning seamlessly with the core principles enshrined in the NEMA Act. By promoting waste segregation, connecting users with recyclers, and fostering a culture of environmental responsibility, Greenify-254 aspires to:
- Reduce Landfill Waste: Diverting waste from landfills will significantly minimise greenhouse gas emissions and environmental pollution caused by overflowing landfills. Increase Recycling Rates: User-friendly educational resources and a direct connection to recyclers will encourage more people to embrace recycling, leading to a significant increase in overall recycling rates in Kenya. Conserve Resources: Recycling reduces the need to extract virgin resources like timber for paper production or new metals for manufacturing, minimising environmental degradation.
- Economic Benefits: The app can create new job opportunities for waste collectors and support the growth of the "Juakali" sector (informal recycling industry) through increased access to recycled materials.
Social Impact: Efficient waste collection through our platform can lead to cleaner communities and improved public health.
Promote Environmental Awareness: Educational resources and community engagement features will raise awareness about the importance of responsible waste management and compliance with NEMA regulations, fostering a culture of environmental responsibility among Kenyans.
Greenify-254 is not just a web application; it's a call to action for a more sustainable future in Kenya. By empowering users and aligning with the progressive vision of the NEMA Act, we can collectively make a significant difference in protecting our environment and ensuring a healthier future for generations to come.
Challenges
During development, we faced a few challenges. The learning curve was steep, but with determination and teamwork, we overcame it. Additionally, we had to change our app's name after discovering that our original choice was already in use by another organization. Despite these obstacles, we successfully adapted and kept pushing forward.
