Inspiration
After hearing on the radio constantly, it brought us to the realization that food wastage statistics and increasing cost of living are a real problem.
What it does
Prevents food wastage and helps distribute food to food-insecure people. stores would be incentivized to sign up for brand goodwill, potential tax receipts, and reduced disposal costs
How we built it
Figma prototype -> coding. React, Expo, Supabase
Challenges we ran into
Choosing the right tech stack under time constraints required several iterations as we balanced speed, reliability, and team familiarity. We encountered configuration issues around environment variables and build tooling, especially when switching between web and mobile targets. We also had to recover from broken builds after Git pushes, which pushed us to tighten our workflow and communication as a team.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We came up with a good design, and we got it as far as we could in a 24 hour period.
What we learned
We learned the importance of choosing the right tools for the problem, communicating clearly across team roles, and adapting quickly when technical challenges arise. Building a real-time, mobile-first application highlighted how much planning and coordination go into even a simple user flow.
What's next for WasteLess
implement nice to have features (e.g. AI-powdered predictive waste prevention, live metrics showing kg food saved, CO2 emissions avoided, people fed)
