Inspiration

Eliminating Household Food Waste

What it does

Our project inspires households to rethink their leftovers and turn their food into new creative recipes and compost. The goal is to sustainably use leftovers for as many functions as possible to not only help a household but the environment.

How we built it

Using a camera roll folder as input, the openAI GPT-4-Vision analyzes each ingredient found in the pictures. This information is sent and stores in our backend which is implemented using Python and FastAPI. These ingredients are parsed into GPT-4 chat which will output step-by-step recipes. GPT-4 also generates a guide to composting using the available ingredients. This information is then sent to our frontend in Svelte, which organizes the recipes and compositing guide and posts it to our site.

Challenges we ran into

None of us had any previous frontend experience. Creating nice looking webpages and connecting the frontend to our backend was a huge challenge. Also, interfacing with the openAI API was a challenge. Although we do have Python experience, connecting to an external API was a challenge.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

This is our first hackathon ever and we're so proud of how much we've learned over the course of the event. We went in with little knowledge about the full-stack, and we've learned so much about the entire process this weekend. Our project can have a real impact on someone's attitude towards leftovers. The possibilities are endless with generative AI.

What we learned

We learned so much about full-stack Deveopment. From creating Rest APIs and connecting the backend to a frontend using JavaScript. We also learned git and GitHub. We're excited to try again at our next hackathon to implement a more complex API and nicer webpages.

What's next for WasteLess

This project would work great on a mobile device where you can take pictures within the app. This would streamline the photo taking process instead of using a premade folder. Getting this app working on an android device is the clear next step for WasteLess.
