Inspiration
We took the nutrition and health course and fell in love with it. Everyone in our group enjoys eating and appreciate the value of food so we wanted to create a project based upon it. In addition, as some of our members worked at fast-food resutrants, and they have seen first hand the amount of food being thrown out.
What it does
The website is primarly for people to purchase food that is going to be thrown away by resturants for a cheaper price. We also have a nutrition and health courses, that is redeemable for a Ontario seconday school credit, and it teaches our customers the issue of food waste and many other amazing topics. We have a map to show case how far restaurants is from your geolocation.
What we learned
During the course of this hackathon, we learned how to integrate Google Maps into our system. This required us to understand the workings of the Maps SDKs, enabling us to incorporate them into our application and offer accurate location services. We ventured into calculating distances and times between two points. Leveraging Google Maps, we mastered the ability to ascertain the distance from the user’s starting point to their intended destination, along with an estimated time of arrival.
What's next for WasteEDU
Our next step for WesteEDU is to create a test for each unit and depending on scores, we will give out coupons for users for use in our website. The coupon will be a discount the price of our items listed in our website. We also want to make our lessons more interactive with the use of videos and games and etc. We also want to bring this website global as it helps third world nations for the access to food more easily. We also want to create a plateform to help struggling families to purcahse food cheaply.
