Inspiration I was inspired to build ShadowSkills because I noticed a huge gap in how students explore careers. Many of my peers, and even I, often felt lost when trying to choose a career path. Traditional education teaches theory, but students rarely get real-world experience before making critical decisions. I wanted to create a platform where students could “experience their future career before they choose it” and gain confidence through interactive simulations.

What I Learned Building ShadowSkills taught me several key lessons:

AI integration: I learned how to structure prompts to generate realistic, scenario-based interactions for students. User-centered design: Designing for high school students required thinking about accessibility, engagement, and gamification. Product development: I discovered how to break a large idea into MVP features, from dashboards to AI-powered simulations. Problem-solving: I learned to adapt quickly when features didn’t work as expected and how to prioritize what matters most for a functional prototype.

How I Built It ShadowSkills was developed as a web app MVP with the following steps:

User research: I surveyed 50+ students to understand their career confusion and unmet needs. Wireframing: Designed clean, student-friendly UI mockups. AI-powered simulations: Integrated OpenAI (or Bubble AI) to generate interactive roleplay scenarios. Progress tracking: Built a database to store user decisions and feedback reports. Gamification: Added badges and performance scores to make learning engaging.

Challenges Faced

Designing realistic AI scenarios that feel authentic and educational. Balancing simplicity vs. depth—too many features would overwhelm students. Ensuring the platform is accessible globally, even for students with limited tech access. Managing time constraints while building a fully functional MVP.

Impact I Hope to Create ShadowSkills aims to give students clarity, confidence, and real experience in exploring careers, reducing the guesswork that often leads to wrong choices. I hope this project empowers students worldwide to make informed career decisions and unlock their potential.
