We were inspired by our passion for environmental activism; we understand the importance of making sure waste is disposed of properly to ensure a greener, cleaner, future. Our app, WasteWell, is a mobile app that will help you figure out how to properly dispose of your less common waste- such as batteries, computers, medical waste, and more. It has a unique feature that allows users to scan an object, and the app will identify and display the appropriate next steps to ensure its proper disposal. Despite our burning passion for innovation, we found ourselves somewhat limited by our first-year knowledge, so we created a model UI using Figma alongside some relevant backend functions in python (such as an implementation of auto-completion and a minimized distance calculator). Some challenges we faced were allocating our time wisely by choosing which resources to use and which app functionalities were feasible in the 38-hour period. We are proud of our final product as first-time hackathon contestants, especially having limited knowledge of the software we utilized. As a team, we learned how to collaborate effectively in such a short period of time and we are grateful for the new skills we acquired along the way. We hope that someday we develop the technical skills to make WasteWell a functioning reality.
