Inspiration
Did you know that the plastic caps of water bottles aren't recyclable, but the plastic bottle is? Or that you're supposed to take the sticker off the banana peel before you throw it in the garbage?
We didn't.
And that got us thinking — what if there was a website that told you exactly what to do with your trash? There are some websites that include complex information about what exactly is recyclable and what isn't, but none that provide simple answers to the question "I have trash. where do I put it?"
That's why we made Wastewatchers.co (inspired by the old weight loss tv show Waist Watchers), a simple website to look up where your trash should go.
What it does
Use our searchbar to search up any item of waste that you're looking to throw away, and you'll be directed to a page with instructions on what to do with it! It's as simple as that. Also, if you upload a picture of your trash, we'll use computer vision to detect what's in the picture, and search up your item in our site automatically!
How we built it
We used HTML, CSS, and JS for our front end, and Node.js for our backend.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We got a web page up and running. Plus, we finished a lot of what our original design was going to look like. And, we got our front end to communicate with our back end!
Challenges we ran into
Learning HTML, CSS, and JS. For one of us, it was our first hackathon, and so learning all the tools in a short period of time definitely proved to be a challenge. Plus, we didn't have enough time to get the image recognition fully working, so right now it's still in it's ideation phase.
What we learned
Time crunches can be hard.
What's next for Waste Watchers
