Inspiration
Most of us today are hyperlocal consumers. With each consumption there is an inevitable amount of waste that is generated. Alas, we consume on a day-to-day (and even hour-to-hour) basis. Akin to how we like our services and products live tracked, tracking of the associated waste could add a lot of rich value to the chain of experience.
What it does
Simply put, it tracks waste from producers (sellers) and tracks it all the way through to it's ultimate reuse, or recycle at the hands of the consumer. This happens by leveraging data from consumers, service providers, as well as by deploying gamification.
How we built it
We used data from the orders (of Swiggy) at random and built it by a plug-in of waste related data (primarily related to packaging material) for each type of food material, with various permutations and combinations. This gives a flexible enough system that can track the waste data.
We built it using mySQL, HTML, .PHP.
Challenges we ran into
- Dealing with the vast variety of packaging, while attempting to make the process simple for any user.
- Building a meaningful UI.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The attempt to live track waste is difficult, as most people do not see value in doing so. We are proud that we put in time and effort we put in.
Getting a very basic, yet scalable platform ready.
What we learned
- Preparation is key.
- Hard work is not optional.
What's next for Waste Tracker
To integrate it with real-time waste data and bring the algorithm as accurate as possible.
