Inspiration The project was inspired by the issue of improper waste disposal and the lack of recycling awareness. Many people don’t know how to sort their waste correctly, leading to recyclable items ending up in landfills. I wanted to create a simple solution that helps users sort waste properly, request waste collection, and build sustainable habits.
What it does The Waste Sorting Assistant helps users quickly identify and categorize waste, provides tips for proper disposal, allows them to request waste collection, and tracks their recycling progress through a gamification system.
How we built it The project was designed with UI/UX principles, focusing on ease of use, accessibility, and an eco-friendly aesthetic. Key features include Quick Access Categories, a searchable waste guide, a waste collection request form, and progress tracking with rewards to encourage user engagement.Use clear, universally recognized icons (e.g., a bottle for plastic, a leaf for organic waste). Ensure enough contrast between the icons and background for visibility. Pair icons with text labels to improve understanding. Make icons large enough to be easily seen on all devices
Challenges we ran into One of the biggest challenges was creating an interface that was both visually appealing and easy to use for different users. It took multiple iterations and user feedback to ensure the waste sorting and scheduling process was quick and hassle-free. Another challenge was keeping the information educational yet engaging without overwhelming users.
Accomplishments that we're proud of We successfully built an intuitive platform that makes waste sorting easier and encourages users to take eco-friendly actions. The gamification feature adds motivation, and the smooth UI ensures a seamless experience.
What we learned We learned the importance of user experience design, clear navigation, and interactive features to keep users engaged. Testing and feedback were crucial in refining the platform to ensure it meets user needs effectively.
What's next for Waste Sorting Assistant Future plans include integrating AI-powered waste recognition, expanding region-specific waste guidelines, and collaborating with waste collection companies to make scheduling pickups more efficient. Adding a community feature for users to share tips and achievements could further encourage sustainable practices.
