Inspiration
The inspiration for this project stemmed from the growing need to address waste management issues in urban areas. Observing the inefficiencies in current systems, such as overflowing bins and improper waste segregation, we aimed to create a smart solution that leverages technology to improve waste collection and disposal.
What it does
The Smart Waste app provides an integrated platform for efficient waste management. It allows users to: Report overflowing bins and illegal dumping. Schedule waste pickups and track their status. Access information on proper waste segregation. Receive notifications for recycling drives and community clean-up events.
How we built it
We built the Smart Waste app using Kotlin for Android development. The backend is powered by Firebase, providing real-time database capabilities and authentication services. We utilized Google Maps API for location-based features and integrated machine learning algorithms to optimize waste collection routes.
Challenges we ran into
Building this app presented several challenges: Implementing real-time updates for waste collection schedules and bin statuses. Integrating location-based services accurately within budget constraints. Ensuring user-friendly interfaces while incorporating complex functionalities. Overcoming data privacy concerns and securing user information.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of: Successfully deploying a fully functional app that addresses a critical urban issue. Creating an intuitive user interface that enhances user experience. Implementing efficient algorithms for route optimization and real-time updates. Engaging with the community through features like recycling drives and clean-up events.
What we learned
Through this project, we learned: Advanced Kotlin programming and Android app development skills. The importance of user-centered design in developing practical solutions.
