Inspiration

Troubled by the alarmingly high numbers of homeless people in our own hometowns, Atlanta and San Francisco, we were determined to find an environmentally friendly and equitable solution to reduce the numbers of people forced to sleep under bridges and on park benches and build community within the homeless population. Our solution is our non-profit Warming Hearts.

What it does

Users are able to navigate the website to:

  1. Educate themselves on the biggest cities experiencing homelessness and which campgrounds are accessible for that population.
  2. Donate supplies directly to the less fortunate.
  3. Purchase merchandise where part of the funds will go towards funding for the homeless population.
  4. Find the nearest campgrounds based on their location.

How we built it

We used the Wix website and its tools to construct the website. As for the program that provides the campground locations, we used Python in Repl.it and googlemaps API.

Challenges we ran into

We had difficulties navigating the Wix website at first as well as figuring out how to use APIs.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud that we were able to bring an idea to life that positively impacts our community. We were able to come together and think of an issue that directly affects both of us since our hometowns are heavily impacted by homelessness.

What we learned

We learned about how to code a website, more specifically how to write code that implements interactive functions (for example, buttons). We also learned more about Python and how to program with user input.

What's next for Warming Hearts

As this is just a mock website of our company, we hope to continue developing our computer science skill and create a smoother-running version of our website in the future.
