Wargods Online

Inspiration

Wargods Online began as a browser game that reached over 300,000 players and lived for six years on social media. Its blend of strategy, RPG progression, and competitive community battles. Reddit’s Developer Platform and Devvit Web created the perfect opportunity to bring the Wargods back. We are rebuilding the game to be Reddit-native and scalable to millions of users.

What it does

Glory

Wargods Online is a 4 vs 4 turn-based strategy RPG where Redditors create their own characters, form teams, train stats, purchase weapons and armor, and embark on quests against AI monsters.

  • Reddit War system is where users create custom challenges for others with specific goals and enemy setups.
  • Battleground is where players can challenge themselves against other teams directly.

Team formation is where the community magic happens. Player have a choice of buying Mercenaries and Wargods or scanning the community to add other Redditors to their team. This dynamic creates the interdependence and teamwork to achieve success at higher levels.

How we built it

The frontend is built in Phaser for fluid 2D rendering, animations, and battle effects. Characters, stats, and inventories are stored using Devvit’s Redis integration.

Challenges we ran into

Warriors

The biggest challenge has been learning Phaser and Devvit Web technologies. Debugging race conditions, manually placing elements, and managing UI complexity. Converting from PHP to modern JS/TS was a grind but ultimately a rewarding one.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Overall the experience building on Devvit Web has been great. The scalability and UGC capabilities open the door to endless gameplay options. Bringing Wargods back to life in a way that feels competitive, modern, and community-driven is a huge milestone.

Victory

What we learned

We learned the basics of building games on the platform. UGC game design was another important lesson to allow players to become part of the content. In the past, the content eventually died due to the costs of building new experiences but with UGC the community can challenge each other and extend the life of the game.

What's next for Wargods Online

Dragon

The next step is to expand content and social features:

  • More quests, classes, and equipment.
  • Premium gear and items.
  • Boss battles, PvP tournaments, and dragons!
  • Server-side progression (level-ups, skill unlocks, deeper training).
  • Leaderboards and Champions scene.
  • Expanding Reddit War with Guilds and Clans.

Long-term: reintroduce the systems from the original Wargods, so massive groups of Redditors can battle for dominance together.

Wargods Online is back and this is just the beginning!
