Inspiration

I was inspired to create this project because I needed a software solution to manage inventory. However, all the existing solutions either involved complex ERP systems or were too difficult to use and set up, often requiring training for personnel, who then would not use it. With hands-on experience in two tradesmen companies that manage both small and large warehouses, I knew exactly what features could be removed to make the software as lean as possible. I closely collaborated with storage managers, observing how they operate to ensure the software would make their operations as fluid as possible and allow for quick initial setup.

What it does

Warehouse Watcher is a streamlined inventory management solution designed to simplify warehouse operations for small businesses. It avoids the complexity of traditional ERP systems, focusing instead on essential features that provide speed, ease of use, and valuable reporting for minimal to no cost.

How we built it

The project was developed using Next.js and Convex DB, with a strong emphasis on creating a user-friendly interface that requires minimal training. The design process involved direct feedback from storage managers to ensure the software met real-world needs without unnecessary complexity.

Challenges we ran into

One of the main challenges was simplifying business processes to ensure that the software would be adaptable for other businesses as well. Another significant challenge was addressing the issue of missing reports and records, which is a common problem in inventory registration systems, especially without an integrated solution.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are particularly proud of the speed and ease of use that Warehouse Watcher offers. The value derived from the reports and controls is accessible to businesses at little to no cost, making it a highly efficient tool for warehouse management.

What we learned

Throughout this project, we learned that a lot of conventional wisdom in inventory management is overly complicated. By stripping down the software to its essential features, we could still achieve the desired functionality without the bloat.

What's next for Warehouse Watcher

The next steps for Warehouse Watcher include enhancing mobile support and integrating barcode scanning, which requires specific hardware but would be the final step towards achieving ultimate simplicity in store management.
