Inspiration
Second-hand and independent fashion is one of the best ways to buy clothes: cheaper, often better made, and kinder to the planet. The hard part is picturing it. A pre-owned listing is usually a jacket on a hanger or trousers laid out on a carpet, photographed by the seller, and many private sellers do not take returns. Wardrobe Connect already finds the right listings from a few plain words or a picture. The missing moment was the one in front of the mirror: how will it look on me?
What it does
Describe what you want ("black leather biker jacket, under £40") or paste a link to a picture you saved. Wardrobe Connect returns real eBay listings in your country and currency, closest matches first, with prices including shipping. Pick a listing, add one photo of yourself (upload it or take it with your phone camera), and YouCam's AI Clothes Virtual Try-On puts that exact listing on you. The result appears in a before and after slider, right beside the price, the condition and a Buy on eBay button.
It works on phones and desktops, in light and dark mode, and picks the garment type (top, bottoms, dress, coat or shoes) from the listing for you.
How we built it
- YouCam AI Clothes Virtual Try-On V4.0 (
POST /s2s/v2.0/task/cloth-v4, 2 units per try-on) does the try-on. The server uploads the shopper's photo and the listing photo through the File API (POST /s2s/v2.0/file) with signed uploads, starts the task with the right garment category, checks the task until it succeeds, collects the result and then deletes the task and its files (POST /s2s/v2.0/task/delete). - Wardrobe Connect API (
/v1/findand/v1/find-by-image), our live eBay clothes search in 9 countries, supplies the listings. The app asks eBay for the large version of each listing photo for YouCam. - Runs on Cloudflare Workers (and as a plain Node.js server with no dependencies). The YouCam key is a server secret and never reaches the browser.
- One plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript page, mobile first, with a four-step flow and an accessible before and after slider.
- Tested: 43 automated tests, including a stand-in YouCam server that follows the documented protocol, then real try-ons against the live YouCam API.
Challenges we ran into
- Seller photos are not studio photos. YouCam works best with a front-facing single garment, and for bottoms it wants the item being worn. The app picks the garment type from the listing title, explains what makes a good photo, and turns YouCam errors into plain advice.
- Privacy by design. A shopper's photo is personal. It is redrawn on the device (which strips location data), held in memory only while it uploads, never stored or logged, and the YouCam task is deleted as soon as the picture is collected.
- A safe public demo. Picture links are checked, listing photos only come from eBay's image server, and per-visitor and daily limits protect the demo's units.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- A complete shopping loop: words in, a real listing on you, a real link to buy.
- No mock-ups in the real path: without a key the app says try-on is off rather than faking a result.
What we learned
- How YouCam's asynchronous task model fits a shopping flow: file slots and signed uploads, a task id, polling, and a short-lived result link.
- The garment picture matters as much as the shopper's photo, and choosing the right garment category makes a visible difference.
- Clear privacy wording builds trust at exactly the moment you ask someone for a photo of themselves.
Consumer and retail value
- For shoppers: confidence before buying pre-owned, where returns are often not possible. Fewer wrong purchases and less waste.
- For sellers and marketplaces: try-on on any listing photo, with no 3D models or studio shoots, for the long tail of one-off items that never get professional photography.
- For the business: free for shoppers and funded by affiliate commission on purchases, so the try-on directly supports the sale.
What's next
Trying on more of the listings people find, from more shops, and bringing try-on to Wardrobe Connect's assistant integrations.
The model in the demo is YouCam's own sample photo from the API documentation.
