Inspiration: The new job market is a difficult place to navigate. This is because of many advances in technology, specifically AI that havre never been seen before, taking over many entry level jobs. The worry for finding a job amongst young people is real and worrying. To help solve this issue, I wanted to create a website that helps young people navigate through this difficult time. What it does: First Rung shows young people the real data on the job market, what's growing, what's declining, and what skills actually pay. You type in your background and target role and it maps your skills gap, builds a 90-day action plan, and writes a tailored CV. All backed by six real research reports. How I built it: A single HTML file using the Claude API. The AI advisor is briefed on six real reports including WEF Future of Jobs 2025, Goldman Sachs, LinkedIn, McKinsey, ONS and PwC so every answer is sourced, not made up. Challenges I ran into: Being honest without being discouraging. Youth unemployment is at 14% and 80% of people feel unprepared. The tool had to tell the truth while still giving people something useful to do about it. Accomplishments that we're proud of: Every stat links to its primary source. When the advisor says AI Engineer is the fastest growing UK role, that comes from LinkedIn's actual hiring data. What I learned: Young people don't need more motivation. They need accurate information and a specific next step. What's next for First Rung: Live job listings integrated into the skills gap mapper. Expansion to the other 11 countries in this hackathon, because youth unemployment is not just a UK problem.
