Inspiration
Inspired by the Events occuring in East Europe, Particularly Ukraine. Since the War began, we've all been wondering what effects this will have on different sectors of our daily lives. From Food Supply, International Relations, Business and even Environmental Issues, the War in Ukraine has affected the world in a devastating way.
Part of the application. also looks at the Human story at the heart of this, the displacement of Refugees from their homes, and how the rapid Human Re-settlement might have affected CO Emissions in the region.
What it does
Uses ASDI's Sentinel 5P Level 2 Satellite Imagery to analyze the effects of the War in Ukraine on the increase of CO Emissions. The dataset can be applied to Image Classification and even regression or other types of AI Algorithms to Analyze and Predict the present/future effect of the War in Ukraine on global Emissions.
How we built it
It was build with Python, as the main Data Processing tool. I used Rasterio, Matplotlib and other libraries to get the data to the desired shape. The AI Model was trained on AWS Sage Maker Studio but developed in Colab as a Jupyter Notebook. The Image dataset from the concerned periods has been stored on AWS S3 and can be accessed publicly.
Challenges we ran into
The Dataset was quite huge, in the end I had to split it into 3-4 subsets to get the data converted, cleaned and organized. The Second challenge came when the Model would kill/crash during training, I had to configure a 8vCPU/32GB Clusterf on a Sagemaker Data Science cluster to get the training to run successfully.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Creating a Dataset that can be analyzed, and getting to train the model, even though it's only a basic algorithm, at least I can grow the AI from there.
What we learned
AWS Sagemaker is a life saver, I almost launched a CUDA instance but Sagemaker provides a very good managed AI platform. I've also learnt that gathering and organising data is not a small feat, it takes time and planning to get the dataset just right.
What's next for War in the Air
Hopefully, Get the AI Models to a production level and get the analysis/prediction data in a report. I would also like to make the Project Open Source to allow other like minded people from around the world to contribute.
I hope the project can also look at Conflicts/Wars in other parts of the world, including Weapons testing and how these activities can affect our global Footprint in the emission of Greenhouse Gases.
