Inspiration
Throughout my life, I’ve experienced several “apocalypses” — from pandemics and lockdowns to local blackouts and wars. What always surprised me was one strange phenomenon: why do people suddenly start hoarding toilet paper en masse? It’s such a simple everyday item, yet it becomes the most sought-after resource. This curiosity inspired me to create a game that humorously plays on this “toilet paper panic” and highlights how irrational and silly our reactions to crises can be.
What it does
Wipe Race is a fun mini runner game where you choose one of three characters — a fat guy, a granny, or a teenager — and navigate through the apocalypse collecting as much toilet paper as possible. In each location, zombie heads pop up and you need to click on them quickly to fend them off and earn toilet paper rolls. Each day, your character consumes some toilet paper depending on their usage rate. If you run out of rolls, it’s game over. The goal is to survive as many days as possible by stockpiling toilet paper!
How we built it
We built the project using React and the Bolt.new platform to integrate seamlessly with Reddit. The game features character selection, dynamic locations, a “whack-a-zombie” mini-game mechanic, and a daily toilet paper consumption system. The visuals and tone emphasize humor and the absurdity of apocalypse survival, keeping the gameplay simple and engaging.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was sharing one laptop with my boyfriend, who was also participating in the hackathon. For the last two days, we took turns coding and implementing features. Although the idea was there from the start, I only managed to bring everything together into a working game at the very last moment — right before the deadline! It was a race not just in the game, but in real life.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud to have turned a silly idea into a fully functional game with engaging gameplay, humor, and Reddit integration. Despite limited resources, the game is fun, addictive, and perfectly captures the spirit of the challenge — creating something gloriously silly and joyful.
What we learned
We definitely need a second laptop! So we don’t have to fight over one keyboard and can bring our ideas to life more smoothly. At least taking turns worked, but having two devices would make the process way more fun and efficient.
What's next for Wape Race
We plan to add more locations and quirky events, improve graphics and animations, and introduce multiplayer features so friends can compete. Ultimately, we want to make the game even crazier and more unpredictable, ensuring every playthrough is a hilarious test of luck and reflexes.
