Inspiration

In the United States, data has shown that there are more civilian deaths by the police than in any other country. Minority populations have faced the greatest consequences for this. We wanted to create a medium to portray this data effectively and to provide insightful data analytics.

What it does

Our data analytics dashboard consists of multiple d3 visualizations including maps, bar charts, and line charts. We displayed every data point from the past six years of fatal encounters between the police and civilians on the map which features panning and zooming. We also created bar charts and line charts to highlight different relationships we thought were important to emphasize in this data.

How we built it

Challenges we ran into

Because of the lack of a federal database of police shootings to the public, we had to use the Washington Post database. In addition, we had a lot of difficulties setting up the d3 visualizations initially. We had to use a Heroku proxy in order to access the data stored by the Washington Post that we deployed ourselves.

Time management, monitoring the work between members, learning new technologies in a small time window were other hardships we faced.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we were able to create and learn how to use the powerful data visualization tool, d3.js We are also proud that we were able to learn more about the racial disparities in America and how they are directly affecting our communities

In addition, we are proud that we were able to provide essential data to the public in a medium that is easily accessible and analyzed.

Lastly, we are proud that we were able to finish the project in a way that it can be used by the public.

What we learned

Learned new technologies(d3.js, react.js, node.js) Learned time management skills Learned organizational and project management skills

What's next for WantedToLive

We plan to incorporate and overlay economic data to see if we can find more relationships between the data. In addition, we hope to see if we can add police reforms in the past to see how they have directly affected the number of fatal encounters that have occurred.
