Inspiration
Through brainstorming our ideas for this year's theme, we realized that one of the biggest difficulties people face while traveling, and something that discourages them, is the idea of having to travel alone. The loneliness of being in a new place can be an overwhelming deterrent for some.
What it does
-Our collective love of traveling -embracing other peoples culture -having a homebase away from home -connecting with others experiencing the same cultural encounter you are -Fosters a ‘travel buddy’ system for people of similar background, age, culture, and interests! -Aims to promote safety in numbers when visiting foreign spots -Allows people to create groups, direct message, and plan meetups
Wandr strives to create a travel buddy system for people of similar background, age, culture, and interests! Wandr allows people to create groups, direct messages, and plan meetups in order to create memorable experiences out of their journeys.
How we built it
-JavaScript -CSS -Python -Apache -Figma -Flask -React
Initially, we designed an extensive prototype using Figma. We set up the database using Apache. Then, we worked in teams to realize our prototype as code by using React for the frontend and Flask for the backend. We divided up the pages and implemented them separately, then worked to link them together.
Challenges we ran into
-We encountered technical skill issues that resulted in the loss of progress -Setting up everyone in the team was difficult as well, because a lot of people did not know each other
Accomplishments that we're proud of
-Stylistic choices pertaining to the the aesthetic of the page -Our ability to come together as a team and work together for this project
We came together as a team, many of whom did not know each other at all initially, and worked cohesively to create as polished a product as we could given our limited time. We were able to collaborate in a productive manner and resolve differences of opinion peacefully and in a way that satisfied everyone. We allocated tasks in a way that best fit each individual’s skill-set, but we were flexible with our working arrangement.
What we learned
-Many of us received lots of new exposure to database structuring -First time collaboratively working on a project
What's next for wandr
Updating our software to optimize user experience and also eventually “creating” premium features to curate user experience
