Our team was inspired by the lack of platforms that provide students with authentic, in-depth insights into universities they’re considering for exchange. We saw a gap—students often struggle to find real reviews about accommodation, academics, and campus life. We wanted to bridge that gap and empower them to make more informed decisions about their once-in-a-lifetime study abroad experience.

WanderWise allows users to read detailed, student-written reviews about their exchange universities. These reviews cover a range of categories such as accommodation, academic experience, food, and more—providing future exchange students with genuine insights. Each university’s page features a clean layout with charts and image carousels for better visual understanding.

We built WanderWise using JavaScript, React, HTML, CSS, and Node.js, with Supabase powering both the frontend and backend services. We integrated libraries like Recharts for visualizing data and Swiper.js for creating smooth image carousels to enhance the UI/UX.

One of the biggest challenges was working with Supabase—it was our first time using it as a backend service. Connecting APIs and handling data submission dynamically came with a steep learning curve, and we encountered multiple errors early on. However, we pushed through and were ultimately able to make it work seamlessly. We also tried to implemented profanity filters and spam detection to ensure quality and respectful content, however we weren't able to integrate it with Supabase entirely and decided to take it out in order to maintain a functioning website.

We’re proud of the intuitive and polished UI we created—particularly the charts and photo carousel that make information easier to digest. We’re also especially proud of successfully enabling image uploads and storage via Supabase, something that initially seemed very challenging.

This project was filled with trial and error, but it gave us a chance to apply what we’ve learned in class to a real-world product. It taught us how to think through user experience, backend logic, and frontend functionality holistically.

In the future, our main goal will be to implement the profanity filters and spam detection to ensure quality and respectful content. It is one of the biggest regrets that we have for our current website that we weren't able to achieve successfully. We also plan to implement a comments section where users can interact, ask questions, and engage with other students’ experiences.

We are unable to deploy to Huawei Cloud and are fixing it promptly.
