Inspiration

Our team wanted to solve the problem of finding good places to visit in a new city, while still avoiding big crowds of tourists. WanderWise makes this process just that much easier for users.

What it does

Our simple Android app allows users to input their travel destination and immediately find the top 5 most "overrated" locations and the top 5 most "underrated" locations in the area. Whether a location is "overrated" or "underrated" is based on a combination of average ratings and the number of reviews.

How we built it

WanderWise was built in Android Studio using Java. The app utilizes the Yelp Fusion API to gather the needed information about the restaurants. Our front end was designed with XML.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge we faced was integrating the Yelp API.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we were able to connect to the Yelp API and access the specific pieces of information we wanted from it, such as restaurant names and phone numbers. We are also proud of our app's simple and effective design.

What we learned

Through our time spent working on WanderWise, we furthered our understanding of Java and XML, gained more experience working with APIs, learned how to use a new platform (Android Studio) to create our own Android app, and learned how to utilize Github to make project collaboration much more effective and efficient.

What's next for WanderWise

WanderWise is in its very early stages and we hope to continue to enhance it. In terms of appearance, we would like to continue to polish our design. In terms of functionality, we plan to utilize the Google Maps API so a user can input the locations of two cities, and the most overrated and underrated businesses on the route from one city to the other would be returned to the user.
