Inspiration
We were inspired by platforms like Airbnb that have changed the way people discover and book places to stay. We wanted to create Wanderlust, a simple and user-friendly platform where travelers can find unique accommodations and hosts can easily list their properties. Our aim was to make the travel and booking experience more convenient, accessible, and enjoyable.
What it does
Wanderlust is a vacation rental platform that connects travelers with property hosts. Users can:
Explore and search for available properties View property details, images, prices, and locations Create and manage property listings Book suitable accommodations Manage their bookings Share reviews and ratings Use a responsive interface across different devices
How we built it
We built Wanderlust as a full-stack web application using modern web technologies.
Frontend: React.js, HTML, CSS, JavaScript Backend: Node.js and Express.js Database: MongoDB Authentication: User authentication and authorization APIs: REST APIs for communication between the frontend and backend
We focused on creating a clean interface, structured backend APIs, and a database architecture capable of managing users, properties, bookings, and reviews.
Challenges we ran into
During development, we faced several challenges, including:
Designing an efficient database structure Connecting the React frontend with backend APIs Implementing authentication and authorization Managing property images and listing data Handling booking-related logic Making the website responsive on different screen sizes Debugging integration issues between different technologies
Solving these challenges helped us improve our problem-solving and full-stack development skills.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of successfully developing a complete full-stack vacation rental platform from idea to implementation. Some of our key accomplishments include:
Building a functional property listing system Creating a smooth and responsive user interface Integrating frontend, backend, and database Implementing user authentication Developing booking and review functionality Creating a project inspired by a real-world platform and adapting it into our own concept
What we learned
Through Wanderlust, we learned how different technologies work together to build a real-world application. We gained practical experience in:
MERN stack development REST API development MongoDB database management React component-based development Authentication and authorization Debugging and error handling Responsive web design Teamwork, collaboration, and project planning
Most importantly, we learned how to turn an idea into a working product while continuously improving it based on challenges and feedback.
What's next for Wanderlust
We plan to make Wanderlust more powerful and user-friendly by adding:
Online payment integration Interactive maps for property locations AI-powered recommendations for personalized stays Real-time chat between hosts and guests Wishlist and favorite properties Advanced search and filtering Host analytics dashboard Multi-language and multi-currency support
Our long-term vision is to turn Wanderlust into a complete travel platform that helps people discover, book, and enjoy memorable stays anywhere in the world.
