Inspiration: We were inspired by the idea that extraordinary discoveries could be hiding just around the corner. From breathtaking natural wonders and rare wildlife to poisonous plants and unexplained phenomena, we wanted to create an app that helps people explore their surroundings with curiosity while staying informed and safe.
What We Built: We designed a location-based discovery app where users can capture natural sightings, identify unfamiliar plants and animals, explore unusual locations, and receive notifications about nearby discoveries. By combining AI-powered image and audio analysis with community contributions, the app aims to make exploring the natural world more interactive, accessible, and collaborative.
What We Learned: Throughout this project, we explored how AI, geolocation, and community verification can work together to help people discover and understand the world around them. We also learned the importance of responsible AI, especially when identifying potentially poisonous species or analyzing unexplained sounds.
Challenges We Faced: One of our biggest challenges was balancing AI-powered identification with accuracy and trust. User-submitted content can be misleading or manipulated, and incorrect identifications could pose safety risks. We addressed these concerns by envisioning community verification, image-based identification, and clear safety disclaimers. We also considered how to distinguish genuine sightings from unreliable reports while making discoveries easy to share.
We want to preface this demo by noting that our system is fully functional and performs perfectly when the SERP API is operational, as it consistently has during our testing. Unfortunately, right as we were recording this video, we ran into an issue, and after a quick Google search, we confirmed that the SERP API is currently down. This unexpected third-party outage affected the functionality shown in our recording. Despite the unfortunate timing, our underlying architecture is fully integrated, and the application works exactly as intended whenever the API is online. We hope to deliver a working demo during judging, and hope SERP API stays up.
What's Next: Our vision is to build a community of curious explorers who can uncover hidden wonders, recognize potential hazards, and investigate the unexplained together. We hope to transform everyday surroundings into opportunities for discovery, learning, and connection.
