Inspiration
Collaborative games like Wordle (not to mention social isolation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic) inspired us to create an app that improves one's state of well-being.
What it does
Wander gives the user a daily prompt with something to search for outside. This incentivizes the user to take a break — for at least 5 minutes — to stretch their legs, and maybe even see something cool!
How we built it
We first brainstormed an idea, then split into teams for frontend and backend.
Challenges we ran into
Nobody in the group had any clue how to use React Native, so much of our time was spent figuring out mobile app design with it. As such, we didn't quite get to implement camera functionality, despite our fully-functioning backend.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We planned both the backend (with Google Docs) and the frontend (with Figma) very well, and almost completely finished execution of these plans. We managed GitHub and git through crazy merge commits, and overall made a mostly-functioning app.
What we learned
React Native has a steep learning curve! While exploring new technologies during a hackathon is exciting, it's quite challenging to fully understand a new field (mobile development) in such a short time frame.
What's next for Wander
- Flesh out the frontend to fully represent the Figma
- Implement session management for every backend endpoint
- Add streaks for multiple daily photos in a row
- Friends!
