Inspiration
According to Money & Mental Health Policy Institute, almost one in five (18%) people with mental health problems are in problem debt. People experiencing mental health problems are three and a half times more likely to be in problem debt than people without mental health problems (5%). The team behind Wally decided to create a finance-based solution that would help resolve the difficulties behind money management and financial literacy for a lot of individuals.
In the developer's country, the Philippines, money management and financial literacy are not issues majorly discussed in a lot of institutions. As such, in order to alleviate the issue of mental health and even financial literacy in a third-world country where its citizens have difficulty in making budgeting decisions and sufficient management over their expenses and lifestyle, Wally was formed.
What it does
Wally is an application (currently in the form of a website as a prototype) that uses the information it has obtained from its user's data that has been inputted as the person creates their own account. It forms suggestions based on their current location and based on their current budget and amount of necessities through AI technology and from a wired database.
From this, it forms an elaborate expense and budget plan depending on the time frame the user requests it for (either a week or a month). Additionally, it also forms suggestions for what use the extra money left for the user will be for and even surveys to improve customer experience.
Challenges we ran into
The ideation and the concepts to make it different, including the designs, were difficulties we had faced. However, the developer managed to create solutions and concepts based on pre-existing concerns and existing processes for both the design and problem to be solved through AI.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The developer managed to make a small prototype and design, while also creating a video pitch that enhanced all the aspects of the idea. It was also submitted on time.
What we learned
Creating this idea also requires market validation when creating it, therefore, it is important to also create a survey and ad campaigns (though depending on what your solution is) to know the validity and profitability of this idea if it will be sold or further developed.
What's next for Wally
Wally will continue on finding ways to develop this idea further by making a working prototype and submitting it to other concepts or challenges for funding and further development.
