As a group of highschoolers, we are unfamiliar with personal finance. We realized that this is the case for the majority of people, both our age and older. Financial literacy is important because we need to know how to manage our money and how to support ourselves. This is an essential topic that everyone needs to know, and we wanted to focus our project on solving this issue.

What it does

Wallee is a chrome extension that works as a search engine for financial terms. When the user is reading something finance related and doesn't understand a word, they can open up the Wallee extension and get the definition right there.

How we built it

The Wallee chrome extension is built with HTML, Javascript, CSS, and Python.

Challenges we ran into

We had a big problem trying to connecting our frontend to the backend. We had issues downloading the wikipedia library in python and then connecting the python to our html. With the help of our amazing mentor Victoria we were able to access the wikipedia library! We ended up converting our python backend to javascript.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of our amazing idea and working together to complete this project. We had a great time and we are glad that instead of giving up, we pushed through our challenges.

What we learned

We learned how to code a chrome extension! Although it was a lot of learn, our result was very awarding and we are all excited that we pulled this off given that we've never made an extension before.

What's next for Wallee

We hope to expand our chrome extension by automatically scanning the website to give the users definitions of the financial terms, instead of having them manually input it in. We also hope to add some advice and next steps to encourage the users to look at different resources that teach them how to manage their finances and such.
