Inspiration
Two things were the main inspiration for our project: Campus Climate and Campus Safety. Having someone to walk to and talk to can make attending classes and the commute between classes a way more enjoyable experience. However, you do not always know someone who is going the same way. We wanted to provide a service which can allow students to put away their earphones and meet someone new while going to their next class. This also has an application in helping campus safety by matching up walking buddies for a late-night commute home.
What it does
You input where you + where you are headed + by when, and the app will match you with a walking buddy! Some further goals we hoped to implement were GPS automatic location tracking, matching people based on their interests, and allowing for calling and anonymous calling for the less social or times when no walking buddy is available.
How we built it
We used a MongoDB Atlas database and Stitch to communicate with the database. We developed a web application using React.
Challenges we ran into
The pace of our project was not as fast as we hoped due to the frequent bugs we ran into at each step of the way. We realized that JavaScript is highly unfriendly for debugging :(. We were also unsure how to start initially, but got very helpful guidance towards MongoDB Atlas and React from a mentor.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are very proud that we were able to use a tool brand-new to us and create a semi-functioning product! Learning about the MongoDB service was very fun and interesting.
What we learned
We learned that there are a lot of tools online to help with small start-up projects.
What's next for Walky&Talky
We hope to become billionaires with this revolutionary product! See you soon, Zuckerberg!
