Inspiration

Studies conducted by the CDC show that more than 1 in 3 women experience sexual violence involving physical contact during their lifetime (https://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/sexualviolence/fastfact.html ). Throughout their lives, women experience and fear different forms of sexual violence in public spaces. This ranges from unwelcome sexual remarks and gestures to rape, and kidnapping. Fear of sexual violence can reduce women's freedom of movement and their ability to comfortably, and safely enjoy public life. As a result, many women are afraid to be alone in public spaces. As women ourselves, we understand this fear firsthand. This is how we came up with the idea for SafeWalk. There is a saying that “safety is in numbers”. To create a safer, more comfortable public environment for women, we have developed a service that allows women to form groups with one another and safely travel to their desired destination in a group. Our mission is to guarantee the safety and comfort of women commuting in public areas. Our vision is to enforce a sense of community and unity to achieve the security of all.

What it does

Using SafeWalk, women in close proximity to one another can connect and form a safe group to walk one another to their desired locations. Users of the app can rate their group members and if necessary, report one another, to ensure a safe and comfortable commute. In the case of an emergency, users can call an alert on the area, automatically indicating a red zone on the map and contacting authorities. When creating a service that requires its users to share their locations with other users, there are several safety concerns to consider. It is crucial to guarantee user authenticity to prevent malicious users from targetting others. To ensure that our service will not be abused, we have collectively developed several safety measures and rules: All users of our application must be 18+. There is a certain expectation that minors are supervised by a parent or guardian and that they will be there to pick them up safely. Additionally, our company deems it unsafe for minors to share their locations publicly without understanding the potential consequences. Our service includes an alert button in the situation where one of our users faces a dangerous individual. This feature will contact authorities immediately and send out a banner notification to all app users to avoid the area. A rating system is embedded in our service to ensure the authenticity of our users. This opportunity for feedback is given upon leaving a group, and can then be used when deciding to accept/decline others from a group. If a user is reported by 3+ accounts with valid cause, their account will be suspended. This can be appealed by contacting admin, but each user is limited to two strikes.

How we built it

We built it using Figma design as a foundation and HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to implement the actual project.

Challenges we ran into

Unfortunately, within the span of 56 hours and working with limited resources, we were unable to add all the features we wished to include on our website.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our team has created our first website! We are extremely proud of the progress we were able to make throughout the past few days.

What we learned

We have learned Figma, HTML, CSS, javascript. We improved our cooperation and communication skills by working together and consistently displayed our time management.

What's next for SafeWalk

If we had the opportunity to carry on with this project, we would work to include and continuously improve features to guarantee user satisfaction. Additionally, we would make this app into a phone application for accessibility and simplicity.
