Inspiration:
We were inspired by the desire to create an engaging and meaningful fitness app that motivates people leading sedentary lifestyles with limited opportunities to travel to explore various cities while encouraging them to stay active!
What it does:
Walkmingo counts your steps, for example, if you walk 25,000 steps in a week, it converts it into kilometers and allows you to find out where you would have reached if you walked those many steps at a stretch! Once you reach a city, it encourages you to visit one famous tourist spot with directions provided for them!
How we built it
Using python, we made the code through conditionals, different libraries like PIL, folium, deopy.distance and tkinter, to generate and use coordinates, manipulate distances and to make it more interactive for the user by displaying images and clicking buttons.
Challenges we ran into:
It was particularly challenging to develop a system that accurately used the directions and steps, converted them into kilometers and pinpointed the specific location on the map. At first, though this seemed simpler, it was easier said than done. While developing the user interface in Figma, planning the layout and structuring the pages posed a problem that we eventually found our way around.
Accomplishments that we're proud of:
As our first hackathon, we are proud of creating a prototype app that encourages a better lifestyle and tackles the very real problem especially post-pandemic since "work for home" breeds a lot more illnesses like obesity and heart disease due to a lack of exercise. We met our goals by designing an interface and writing the code for the prototype in under 24 hours!
What we learned
We learned how to tackle challenging issues within a limited period of time, while brainstorming and creating a program that is within our skillset. We also learned the importance of the gamification and award related gratification one can receive from an app like Walkmingo that pushes the player to complete more steps and hence, lead a better lifestyle!
What's next for Walkmingo:
We would eventually love to integrate more cities and in the long run, allow a worldwide map, allowing the user to explore various countries, cities and their iconic tourist spots, collecting stamps and postcards for each and every place they choose to explore.
