Inspiration

Universities in rural areas all face a similar problem: darker and less populated streets. Walking Buddy was created as a service to help people match up and walk together instead of walking alone.

What it does

Users simply enter their destination and Walking Buddy will match them with someone going in the same direction. Users will never see the other person's exact destination and offers a Facebook authentication to verify the same person you're matched with is the same person that walks with you on your way home. Walking Buddy works a safety tool as well as a social media platform. You will be paired with someone who is Friends of Friends of the User using Facebook's friend list so you can build your own friends list.

What's next for Walking Buddy

Several features can be added to Walking Buddy in the future. These include a rating system, the use of city data to avoid high crime areas on your way home, and internal messaging on the app.

I managed the workflow from the location picker to the activity showing the matches found, set up the Firebase realtime database and coded the layouts for some of those activities.

What I really like is bikes, what am I doing here
I worked on implementing the Facebook API with our app for login system and assisted in setting up the NoSQL database using Firebase. All of this was completed under 2 can of redbulls. Talk about efficiency!

Having previous experience with Hackathons, Android and Google Maps API, I was able to help all team developers follow good programming principles. It started with a good design implementation, with lots of user cases and visual representations. Then we followed up with the actual coding implementations. I worked hard to make sure that every line of code was an important addition to our app, but near the end of the 24 hours, that was simply not a priority =P I implemented the functionality of picking location destinations, as well as helping other developers with challenges in Android and Google Maps APIs.
