Inspiration

STEPOOO started from a problem I experience myself. I work from home and spend a large part of my day sitting in front of a computer. I knew I should walk more and become more active, but knowing that wasn't enough to motivate me to actually go outside.

I wanted to create something that makes walking feel less like exercise and more like a small daily challenge. Instead of telling people to reach a huge step goal, STEPOOO gives you a simple objective: step outside your circle.

Once you're outside, you often want to keep going.

What it does

STEPOOO turns everyday walking into a rewarding experience. Users can complete a main daily challenge, take shorter Mini Walks, discover collectible Finds while walking, and use Insights to see their progress over time.

The goal is not to build another complicated fitness tracker. It's to give people a reason to get up, go outside, and walk.

How I built it

I built STEPOOO as a mobile app with React Native and Expo.

Location tracking is at the heart of the experience. When a walk begins, STEPOOO records the user's movement and determines when they have left their challenge circle. Walking sessions can continue while the app is in the background, and completed walks are saved so users can review their progress later.

I also focused heavily on making the interface feel simple. There are several systems behind a walk—location tracking, distance calculations, challenges, Mini Walks, Finds, notifications, and statistics—but I didn't want the user to have to think about any of them.

The experience should feel as simple as:

Start → Walk → Leave the circle → Get rewarded.

Challenges I ran into

The biggest technical challenge was reliable GPS tracking.

GPS coordinates aren't perfectly stable, and real-world location data can behave differently depending on movement, signal quality, background execution, and device conditions. I learned a lot about recording GPS coordinates correctly, processing location updates, calculating walking progress, and making the experience reliable enough that users can trust when they have actually completed their challenge.

The other major challenge was UX.

It was surprisingly difficult to make something technically complex feel extremely simple. I spent a lot of time removing unnecessary decisions and information rather than adding more features to the walking experience.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

What I learned

This project taught me much more about mobile location tracking, background GPS behavior, and designing experiences around real-world movement.

But the biggest lesson was that building more functionality doesn't necessarily make a product better. For STEPOOO, the difficult part was hiding the complexity and reducing the experience to one understandable action.

STEPOOO began as a solution to my own sedentary lifestyle, but I hope it can give other people who struggle to find the motivation to walk the same small push to step outside.

What's next for Walk Tracker: Stepooo

First to do marketing and win users trust to start generating income. There are plans for different use of circles to make walking even more fun but for now priority is getting users and that users start to feel benefits of using it.
